Dual Sim Mobile Phones from Spice

September 29th, 2008 by admin97 views ||  |  No Comments »

The biggest problem in going with a cdma connection like reliance or tata indicom was that you got tied to the service provider. Changing the connection meant, you had to say good-bye to your mobile handset as well. Not any more. Many mobile handset manufacturers have come up with dual sim mobile phones to solve this problem. Dual sim mobile phones support two SIM cards in a single handset.

Spice, Samsung, Fly and Motorola have already launched dual sim mobile models. Nokia and LG have plans of introducing dual sim mobile phones in future

Dual sim mobile phones from Spice

Spice mobile has 3 handsets with dual sim. D-80, D-88 and D-90. The Spice Spice D-80 supports only gsm networks. Hence it is ideal for people with 2 mobile numbers as they can carry both of them in a single spice d-80 mobile. Spice D-88 was introduced along with D-80 and it has the killer feature of suporting both gsm and cdma networks. No need to stick to your cdma provider if his services are crappy. Spice D-90 again supports 2 gsm networks only. It is a smart phone with all the multimedia functionalities too. It has a 2 MP Camera which can double up as a webcam.

Verdict: If you want a handset that can work with both cdma and gsm networks then go for Spice D-88. If you want to carry 2 gsm numbers at the same time, then go for spice D-80 or Spice D-90

Used mobile phone can reveal data

September 29th, 2008 by admin53 views ||  |  No Comments »

What do you do with your used mobile phone once you have decided to buy a new mobile phone? You sell it either on some local store or through an online store like contacthello.

Have you ever worried about the data that is present in your used mobile phone, that you are selling to someone else? Seems like you are not alone. A survey conducted by BT, the University of Glamorgan in Pontypridd and Edith Cowan University, Australia found that a fifth of second hand mobile devices contain sensitive company and personal information.

Also nearly a quarter of the mobile phones contained sufficient information to identify the owner and employer.

Blackberry devices were the ones carrying the greatest volume of information.

In many cases it was possible to recover the call history, the address book, the diary and the messages from the device and the information these provided included a business plan of the organisation and it also identified its customers and the state of the relationships with them.

The findings raise a question that will be repeated many time in the near future. As mobile handsets become smarter by the day, are the users realising that this is not just another harmless gadget?

It will be interesting to see a similar study done on used mobile phones in India as well. The findings may not be as scary as the use of smart phones has not become too high. YET !!

Latest Pagerank update

September 27th, 2008 by admin130 views ||  |  9 Comments »

I just noticed that a google pagerank update is in progress. Binaryday has gone down to 3 from 4. I can not compalin as I have been spending a lot of time away from the blog, on my new venture.

Good quality stuff pays off for sure. Ajay’s readerszone has gone upto a pagerank 5. Great show Ajay.

Seems like Google has become really serious about paid links. Abhishek has been penalized even further and abhisays is down to a pagerank of 0. Abhishek is out of town. It will be interesting to see what effect it has on his traffic level after this change.

Madhur’s blog is down to a pagerank of 2 as well. I am not sure why though.

Bibhuti’s adoholik is up at 3. Techbanyan and techpavan continue to be at pagerank 3. Surprisingly fastrevise continues to be at pagerank 3. (Surprising because I have effectively abandoned that site)

With so many changes, it will be interesting to study the impact of the current pagerank changes on the traffic level. I intend to contact all these guys for the same. Hope they will agree. And if you want to volunteer then please drop a comment.

Sell used mobile phones

September 26th, 2008 by admin60 views ||  |  No Comments »

What do you do when the mobile phone manufacturer comes up with a much cooler handset just 6 months after you have purchased a cool mobile phone?

You have 3 choices

  1. Continue with your existing mobile phone
  2. Gift your used mobile phone to your younger sibling
  3. Sell your used mobile phone

I have thought about it for quite sometime now. All the 3 methods have their pros and cons. However I think that option 3 is your best option. I will use the method of elimination to prove that selling your used mobile phone is the best way out.

The advantage of continuing with your old handset is that you do not have to suffer the loss of price. Is that true?? You had bought a mobile worth 18,000Rs. Irrespective of whether you sell the used mobile phone or not, you now have a mobile that is worth only 12,000Rs. So you have already lost the money. You need to simply acnowledge the loss.

Similar logic applies to option 2 as well. Actually this is a much worse option for 2 reasons. a) Most probably your brother/ sister does not need as feature rich phone as your old mobile phone and b) no one appreciates getting a second hand phone as a gift.

Instead what you should do is sell your used mobile phone in the market. Put in some additional money to buy the mobile handset that you want. If you want to gift a mobile to your sibling, then simply buy a mobile that he truely needs and buy him a new mobile.

P.S:

1. I may be a little biased as I am working on a website that will allow you to buy and sell second hand mobile phones. It is still a work in progress. However you can check it out at contacthello.com

2. Your brother may like to buy a second hand mobile. However let him make the choice. Remember mobile phone is a personal object and people like to use one of their choice.

used Mobile Vs Second Hand Mobile

September 25th, 2008 by admin66 views ||  |  No Comments »

You might have noticed that this blog has not been updated in quite sometime. That is because I have been busy with developing my new website that will allow users to buy or sell used mobile phones in India.

I always refer to the used goods as second hand goods. Most of the people I know also use similar terms. So I was confident that people must be searching for second hand mobile. However as a good webmaster I like to rely on data. So I went to google insight for search and compared 2 terms i.e second hand mobile and Used mobile.

Which one do you think won? (Hint: I was absolutely wrong, as usual :) ) You can see the result on Google

India searches for Used Mobile Phone and Not Second hand Mobile Phone. However I have still not understood why it is so? Is it really that indians use the term used mobile phone or is it something else? Please let me your view as I am starting work on my new site and this is critical to the success of the site.

n96 vs iphone

September 17th, 2008 by admin178 views ||  |  5 Comments »

I happened to read my previous post on nokia n96 vs iphone. I just realised that while the comparison between n96 and iphone was quite exhustive, it was a bit too long for my choice. So here is a summary of that post.

  1. The nokia n96 does not stand a chance on coolness factor. iPhone is perhaps the only mobile that can impress your freinds.
  2. N96 has a good user interface. However good is not enough while you are competeing with steve jobs product.
  3. storage and camera are perhaps the 2 most important functionality of any mobile phone. And Nokia N96 is a clear winner on both counts. Actually the camera in iPhone is a shame.
  4. When I first thought about music, I thought iphone will be a clear winner. Was I wrong!!! Nokia n96 beats iphone on the music front as well.
  5. iPhone scores over n96 in battery life though.

iPhone on EMI by Airtel and Vodafone

September 8th, 2008 by admin173 views ||  |  No Comments »

The high price of iPhone is proving to be a deterrent in Indian market. Sales of the iPhone in Airtel and Vodafone stores have been far below the expectation of both the companies. According to industry estimates, both Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Essar have not been able to sell more than 1,500 phones during the first week of launching the product.

To attract more customers Airtel and Vodafone are now offering the iPhone on EMIs through their tie-ups with various banks. Under the schemes by various banks, emis of 3, 6, 9, 12 and 24 months are available (different for different banks). If you go by the 12 month emi option by ICICI bank, you will have to pay the emi of Rs. 2583 and one time processing fees of 12.65%.

You can check the details here: Airtel  and  Vodafone.

The question now is that will this emi scheme lure in buyers. I believe that it will lure in more buyers than earlier but still not what was expected. This is because we Indians are smart buyers. We will not buy an overpriced product even if its available on easy emis. We all know how quickly mobile prices fall. Atleast I will wait for the time till the prices drop by about 10K. Also the unlocked 3G iPhones should be available in the grey market for about 20K pretty soon. No idea on how Airtel and Vodafone will counter these.

EMI option for iPhone by airtel

September 8th, 2008 by admin153 views ||  |  No Comments »

Bharti Airtel has decided to offer easy financing options for all VISA cardholders of ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, SBI Cards and Citibank.

Clever thinking by Airtel. Atleast it will win the war against Vodafone.

top 10 mobile websites in India

September 7th, 2008 by admin345 views ||  |  No Comments »

Opera has come up with the latest state of the mobile web report. It lists the top 10 websites visited by Indians from their mobile phones. As expected google properties rule the list with google.com and orkut.com at the no.1 and no.2 positions respectively. Youtube is at the no.6 position!!! I was really surprised to find that people use youtube from mobile. I mean the internet connections in India hardly support youtube even on the laptop.

Top 10 sites in India (# of unique users)

  1. google.com (Search)
  2. orkut.com (social networking)
  3. yahoo.com ( search + portal)
  4. gamejump.com (games)
  5. rediff.com (portal)
  6. youtube.com (Video)
  7. wikipedia.org (information)
  8. my.opera.com (simply because the study is based on opera users)
  9. songs.pk (music)
  10. peperonity.com (mobile social networking)

I am surprised that no email or instant messenger has made to the top 10 list. I would have expected to see some classified sites in the list as well. Simply because these are the applications that I frequently use on my mobile.

There are quite a good number of new entries there. We shall be covering these sites on this blog. Subscribe to our rss feed to stay updated.

Local search with mobile in India

September 7th, 2008 by admin261 views ||  |  2 Comments »

You are driving back home and think of getting some flower for your wife. Now how do you find out a good florist at that goddamned place? Well a number of local search providers on the mobile are trying to solve the problem for you.

Local search can be accessed in 3 different formats: over the phone, through your mobile browser and through sms.

Voice based local search: Basically you call up a number and the service provider gives you the required information. This method is really helpful when you need the information right now. However you might have to wait for sometime to get to the operator.

The players

Player coverage Contact Number Call Rate Service quality
Justdial 220 cities 69999999 Local call rates Excellent
Google 2 cities (Hyderabad, Delhi) 1-800-41-999-999 Toll Free I don’t know

sms based local search

Those times when you do not want to stand in a queue to talk to an operator, you should try local search through sms. You send the search string to a short code as sms and get back the results as sms. To use the service effectively, you need to know the short code and the format for sending the search string.

The Players

Player Coverage Shortcode Cost Sample Format
Justdial 42 cities 53999 Vodafone, Airtel, BPL, Idea, Aircel, Reliance, Spice - INR 3/- per message | MTNL Mumbai-INR 1/-per message, BSNL - INR 0.80/1 per message
Asklaila Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkatta 58989 VodaFone (Rs 3.00) and Reliance (Rs 3.00).
Onyomo Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkatta 53456 Rs1 - Rs 3 FIND keyword location city

More and more people are using their mobile device to access the internet. However most of the blogs including binaryday are designed for the desktop users. So it is a good idea to get a mobile version of the blog.

wirenode.com allows you to create a mobile version of your blog in less than 1 minute. Your blog needs to have a rss though.

mobile-blog.bmp

Simply enter the url of your blog and hit “mobilze blog” (see image above). Wirenode finds out the url of your rss automatically and creates the mobile version of your blog. See the mobile version of binaryday below.
